A multi-disciplinary research network for those interested in the organization of craft, crafts, and craftwork
Tuesday, June 23, 15:00 BST [16:00 CET/ 10:00 ET]
Hosted by Mixue Li and Belinda Zakrzewska
The session will feature a talk by and discussion with Steve Booton, a potter with nearly 50 years’ experience in making. In recent years, Steve has expanded his practice to become a ceramic fair promoter and gallery owner. He will share insights from his long career as a maker, as well as his experience selling work and supporting other potters through ceramic fairs and, more recently, his gallery. Please register your interest in attending by using this form.
Moreover, we are also planning a brief paper discussion, so please email Mixue Li and Belinda if you are interested in submitting your (working) paper / an (extended) abstract. We will select a small number of papers for the session and especially encourage early-career researchers to submit. The deadline to manifest interest in presenting a paper is Tuesday, June 16, by sending a document and a brief note on the state of development of the paper.
Wednesday 9 September, 12:00–14:30 UK [CET 13:00 / ET 6:00 / JST 21:00]
With Anna Brown (University of St Andrews Business School)
The Teaching Craft Studio is a new initiative where we explore how we can bring craft in the classroom. We share experiences, perspectives, struggles and, most importantly, inspiration that help us bring what we write and read about craft to life in our teaching.
Anna will share her experiences of the design and delivery of the Creativity in Context Enterprise Project, a final year undergraduate module at the University of St Andrews Business School. Anna will reflect on how her background as a potter and art school training shapes her pedagogy and has inspired her to explore arts-based methods in the management classroom. In the spirit of the creativity module, we will engage in practical activity to explore the various ways in which craft's central process of making can facilitate reflection on societal challenges and responsible management more broadly.
In a departure from conventional creativity-related modules, Creativity in Context untethers from themes of entrepreneurialism, innovation and value creation in pursuit of deeper embodied understandings around creative being and knowing. With small and mini 'c' creativity at its heart, the module explores creativity at the level of the everyday, locating creative endeavour in processes of collaborative and purposeful activity. During classes students identify and elaborate problems important to them and use creative methods including poetry, dance, printmaking, and stitching to respond to those problems in ways that could contribute to the achievement of societal goals. Learning from failure, collaborative problem solving, and lively critically reflexive dialogue are the key pedagogic themes that run throughout.
Anna Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Management at the University of St Andrews Business School. Anna's research coalesces around themes of skill, identity and belonging. Her doctoral research followed her journey to becoming a skilled potter as part of the Scottish craft industry. She is currently researching the heritage craft of kilt making and has been learning to make the traditional handstitched kilt. Anna's empirical research is almost always participative or autoethnographic and she has an interest in creative methods both in research and teaching.

The craft research network is open and inclusive. Initiated by Judith Nyfeler and Jochem Kroezen to provide a space for organization scholars to present and receive feedback on their academic papers related to craft – as well as provide the opportunity for a (typically non-academic) craftsperson to present and discuss their work with academics – we rotate the organization and management of events among the research community instead of having a fixed leadership team. This has the benefit of creating something akin to an 'apprenticeship scheme': The current, temporary leader or 'master' supports the newcomer, thereby sharing knowledge and contributing to regeneration.
Anyone can get involved in organizing a session. Please reach out to the organizers of the most recent event to coordinate.
